This company was founded by a former sensor fusion engineer with Lockheed Advanced Development Projects (aka Skunk Works), who sought to re-imagine aviation navigation technology in a location that would provide an ideal manufacturing and testing environment, and a talent pool of skilled and enthusiastic engineers. 

ANPC was founded in 1991 and based in Hood River, Oregon to meet both the environmental needs for the business as well as to attract the talent needed for the company to be successful.  The variable weather and terrain conditions in the Gorge present aviation challenges representative of the thousands of airports worldwide that ANPC and its innovative technology were created to serve. The company’s unique challenges demand that ANPC be at the forefront of several engineering disciplines, and the Pacific Northwest is known as a draw for fresh and ambitious talent. Trillium Engineering, LLC

About Trillium Engineering

Trillium Engineering is the industry leading provider of actionable imagery for small UAS tactical operations. By designing and manufacturing end-to-end imaging solutions for unmanned aircraft, Trillium is able to provide the high-quality tools that their clients need. Trillium’s customers vary widely, but are primarily subcontractors for larger, mostly military-based programs. 

On June 9th, 2021, Trillium announced that it will be supplying Martin UAV with Orion HD80 camera systems in support of a next-generation UAS program. By collaborating with Martin UAV closely for over three years, Trillium engineers understand the specific needs and have developed special integrations for Martin’s airframes. A U.S. Navy prototyping contract for Martin UAV is expected and has been awarded in part due to Trillium’s collaboration and product development. Learn more about that project here.

In addition to military tactical operations, some non-military applications for Trillium’s products include anti-poaching, conservation, and wildland fire control.  For versatility, Trillium offers five product lines ranging from 2.5” – 8” diameter gimbals that are operated remotely using the Skylink user interface. The gimbal combined with the user interface allows operators to concentrate on the mission, providing the precise imagery and data that is required.

Trillium was founded in 2013 by Gail Dagan, Rob Gilchrist, and Jeff Fisher.  All three engineers share an extensive background in unmanned payloads and a passion for technology.  The company remains located in the Gorge area to take advantage of the high quality of life and the concentration of talent. The company currently employs over fifty-five people and utilizes local suppliers whenever possible in order to help sustain a thriving Gorge economy.

About Design3Geometry LLC

Founded in 2020, Design3Geometry LLC is a Lean Champion organization that constructs 3D design models (specializing with Solidworks) and will create or revise standard engineering drawing for original equipment manufacturers.  Additionally, the team provides guidelines for manufacturing tolerance applications (GDT) and best example engineering drawings. Consultations and training are available to any organization seeking to improve their processes for design engineering development and product definition capture of design models and engineering drawings. 

Design3Geometry’s typical customers are small to mid-size manufacturers of original design equipment such as machine tools, consumer devices, 3D printed items, and unmanned aircraft payload components. These customers receive 3D drawings, models, and related documentation to fulfill their production needs at a competitive cost for extensive, professional level knowledge of – and experience with – both national and international standards for product definition (models, drawings, and related documentation). Design3Geometry’s fees for design model and drawing development (or revision) are significantly more competitive than similar services obtained through temp agencies or subcontracted hire.

The company’s flexibility, imagination, and ability to reset strategies in response to ever-changing industry conditions of uncertainty, paired with determined patience, has allowed Design3Geometry to weather the changing landscape that the pandemic has brought to the Gorge’s business community. About the Owner

Fred Tolmie is the owner of Design3Technology, LCC. Fred moved to the Gorge in 2016 and worked with several technology companies in the area. During that time, Fred recognized the need for 3D design services to small and mid-size manufacturers in the area. Seizing the opportunity, Fred created Design3Technology, LLC to be able to fill the gap in services. In his free time, Fred enjoys carpentry, metal working, fly fishing, camping, and hiking. Living and working in the Gorge allows Fred to enjoy all of these hobbies.

Of interesting note, in 1997 Fred was among the first people world-wide to obtain senior level certification from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers as a geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GDT) professional.

Sagetech Avionics’ CEO, Tom Furey came to the Gorge in early 2015 to work for Sagetech Corporation. He is originally from New York but has lived in all areas of the country, and his wife is from Los Angeles. He and his family enjoy activities that the Gorge offers such as mountain biking, windsurfing, wing foiling, and the dynamic music culture. At one point, Tom was convinced that he never wanted to live in the PNW, now he says he will probably never leave.

About Michael Held

Michael Held moved to the Gorge in 2011 to work at the Port of The Dalles as a Planner and Economic Development Specialist through an AmeriCorps program called Resource Assistance for Rural Environments (RARE). He chose this location out of five other potential placements because of the opportunity to work across such diverse geographies and landscapes, cultures, and myriad challenges and opportunities unique to the Gorge. 

Michael left the region from 2016-2019 but moved back to The Dalles with his wife and their two dogs because they were seeking better access to recreational amenities, gorgeous weather, and a slower paced lifestyle.

When not working, you can find Michael with his wife and their dogs somewhere in the northwest on a trail backpacking or hiking or in their new teardrop trailer. Along the way are stops for fishing, golfing, and kayaking. Michael is also an enthusiastic supporter of the regions robust craft beer and wine making industries.

When Michael was nine years old his mother prevented him from trying out for a part in the movie The Sandlot. He reports he has yet to forgive her and still has a hard time talking about it.

About Rick Sottile

Rick Sottile has been an insurance specialist for forty-two years. With a degree in Aviation Management from Pepperdine University and a pilot with a number of ratings, Rick began his insurance career after coming out of the Air Force in 1975 and specialized in aviation/ aerospace insurance. Over the years this expanded to include tech companies, manufacturing cutting edge products of many types. 

As the unmanned aviation industry started to develop, Rick began to work with the UAV/UAS industry also.  Working with start-ups, rapidly growing companies, and international corporations with sales in excess of $100M, he knows how to be proactive to properly protect companies as their needs and exposures grow.

Member Spotlight – Sierra-Olympic Technologies

Sierra-Olympic Technologies is a small technical developer specializing in infrared cameras as components for commercial, scientific, military and government systems. Chris Johnston founded the company in 1995 in the Seattle area and moved it to Hood River in 2010, to be closer to customers in the Gorge’s growing technology and aerospace ecosystem.

Today, the Sierra-Olympic team consists of about twenty engineers, designers, sales, marketing and operations staff, most of whom who work out of the Hood River headquarters. As a sign of steady growth and optimism for the future, the company recently moved into its new class 10,000 clean room production facility that was once the original home of the local-favorite, Ixtapa Family Mexican Restaurant.

Infrared cameras create images from parts of the electromagnetic spectrum that cannot be seen with the naked eye. They have applications in security and defense, research, search and rescue, and civil fields. Sierra-Olympic prides itself on pushing the boundaries of this technology by offering better resolution, lighter-weight cameras and a wider range of applications with each new innovation.

Sierra-Olympic is uniquely situated to deliver cutting-edge infrared technology to its customers. Their position as a small but well-respected developer allows them primary access to the newest technology and components offered by suppliers from around the world. The company develops cameras for Hood Technology Vision Inc. and is an integral member of the greater Hood Tech family located in the Gorge. About Chris Johnston, President Sierra-Olympic Technologies

Chris Johnston graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in Engineering Physics. In 1986 he started working in the UAZ Optical Sciences Center and Tucson astronomy community. Out of college, he worked on cooled, slow scan CCD cameras for astronomy and spectroscopy before jumping to infrared cameras in the 1990’s. Chris enjoys outdoor adventures in the Gorge with his wife and two boys, and stays busy with
projects around his family homes in Hood River and Gig Harbor, WA.

He has created a “Human Management” style that focuses on making a positive and profound impact to all employees, customers, communities, and shareholders. “Frank started the company because he sensed a real need for high reliability, high quality electronic manufacturers in the region,” said Executive VP and General Manager Jay Schmidt.

Located in Vancouver, SFE has a broad footprint with customers all over North America, including Canada and a customer in Europe.  This broad footprint is complimented by a strong local presence.  “We are headquartered at the gateway to the Gorge, which is recognized internationally as one of the largest unmanned aerial clusters in the world,” said Schmidt.

SFE supports customers with a full range of needs, from prototype support to full-turnkey production project management, including electro-mechanical assembly and test.  They provide a high level of new product support in unmanned systems – whether air, ground or water based.  In addition to unmanned systems SFE serves the aerospace, defense, medical and instrumentation sectors.

SFE joined the GTA to facilitate connection and collaboration with the tech industry in the Gorge.  “We have a number of customers and suppliers in the Gorge,” Schmidt said.  “We also have connections with the GTA through mutual partnerships with organizations like the AUVSI Cascades Chapter and Pacific Northwest Defense Coalition.”

About Jay Schmidt, VP and General Manager, Silicon Forest Electronics

Jay Schmidt has been with Silicon Forest Electronics for over 12 years.  He earned a Masters in Business Administration degree from Concordia University – Portland and is the lead instructor for the Manufacturing Leadership Academy at Clackamas Community College.   Jay is currently the Board Chair of the Pacific Northwest Defense Coalition and lives in Vancouver with his wife, and dog Ozzy.  He enjoys classic rock music, camping, and attending Portland TrailBlazer games.

Klein & Associates, Inc.

Klein & Associates, Inc. (KA) is located in the Columbia Gorge with offices in Hood River and Camas. They have provided professional land surveying, mapping, and drafting services for over thirty five years in Oregon and Washington. Klein & Associates, Inc. has an established team experienced in precise, high order geodetic control using GPS networks and has built a reputation for using current technology to provide cost-effective, accurate, and efficient surveying services. 

KA’s team includes Professional Land Surveyors, Professional Civil Engineers, an Architect, a Geologist-in-training, and Technicians (surveying, drafting, material testing). They have recently added a material testing lab, which is the only ODOT-accredited, full-service lab in the Gorge.  As a family-owned business, KA is small enough to be very responsive to clients but large enough to facilitate larger projects from beginning to end.  Recent Hood River projects have included Golden Eagle Park near Hood River Valley High School and several School District projects.

KA uses a full suite of technology to deploy their services: Trimble GPS equipment, AutoCAD Civil 3D and ESRI Arc Map GIS software, and DJI drones. KA was one of the first in Oregon and Washington to utilize drones with LiDAR and currently offers photogrammetry services via drone.  With this tool, KA has been able to provide services such as monitoring river bank erosion in the Seattle area with drones and the use of 3D modeling to engineer solutions. 

As a long-standing member of the Gorge community with continually expanding technological solutions, KA joined the Gorge Tech Alliance to expand their community ties. The KA team volunteers in the community and supports STEM education in the Gorge. Meet the Leaders Behind Klein & Associates: Jim Klein and Leo Sandoval

Co-owners Jim Klein and Leo Sandoval grew up and were classmates in the Hood River Valley.  They separated ways after high school, but both ended up back in the Gorge, specializing in Land Surveying.  After college, Leo went to work in Montana as a Land Surveyor.  In 1996 Jim returned to Hood River to work in his father’s surveying office,  In 2005, Leo returned to Hood River, at which time he and Jim together bought the business from Jim’s father, Anthony Klein. The two have been growing the professional range of services and staff ever since.
